Your right to a
Good Faith Estimate
Effective September 11, 2026
If you do not have insurance or are paying without using it, you generally have the right to a written Good Faith Estimate of expected health care charges. You may request an estimate before deciding to schedule services. It should include the expected charges for the services involved.
- For care scheduled 3 to 9 business days ahead, an estimate is generally due within 1 business day after scheduling.
- For care scheduled at least 10 business days ahead, it is generally due within 3 business days after scheduling.
- If you request an estimate before scheduling, it is generally due within 3 business days of your request.
Keep a copy. If a provider's bill is at least $400 above that provider's estimate, you may qualify for the federal patient-provider dispute process. Learn about your billing rights from CMS, or call 800-985-3059.
